Art and craft of collage
That is the title of a class I teach at Washtenaw Community College. Many view collage as a craft, while I seek to make mine works of art. The 'cut and paste' is more that arranging images. As with my drawings and paintings- it must tell a story or seek a connection with the viewer. I enjoy the ability to more fully mix media while making a collage. Old paintings get recycled along with photographs, and wonderful found objects.
Some collages remain 2D works, while many more of late venture into 3D as boxes and environments. Certainly Joseph Cornell is an inspiration. So too are Romare Bearden, Hannah Hoch, and a few fellow artists in the area.
Listed here is a site with quite a few collage artists: http://www.collageart.org/links/
Materials I use include: old paintings and drawings, my photographs, copies of the former, rice papers and other 'fancy' papers I buy from Hollanders and Creative Papers online. I prefer to use bookbinders glues or acrylic medium to hold things well and keep them archival. Acrylic paints find their way into a few collages, and wallpaper paste mixed with acrylics is luscious for making my own patterns and textured surfaces. Scissors, an exacto knife, a cutting mat and tweezers are helpful tools.
